Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) is a highly contagious viral disease affecting cloven-hoofed animals such as cattle, pigs, sheep, and goats. A recent case has been confirmed in Hönow, Märkisch-Oderland district, Brandenburg, necessitating utmost caution and strict safety measures.

 

What is FMD?

  • Pathogen: Foot and Mouth Disease Virus, a non-enveloped virus
  • Transmission: Direct animal contact, contaminated equipment, vehicles, feed, clothing, secretions and excretions, meat and milk, and air
  • Symptoms: Fever, blisters in the mouth and hoof area and udder, drooling, lameness, reduced milk production, general malaise

 

Protection Measures on the Farm:

  • Establish access controls and hygiene barriers
  • Regularly disinfect shoes, clothing, and vehicles
  • Avoid animal contact between farms
  • Limit human traffic as much as possible
  • No transport of livestock or products like hay, straw, or manure from suspected areas
  • Practice hand hygiene measures (washing and disinfection)
